#FMS0016-07 Ferrous Metal Storage

Ferrous Metals are any metal compounds containing iron, or any metal that will oxidize (rust). The most common ferrous metal on construction sites is rebar. Other construction materials may not be evidently ferrous; however, when oxidation/rust is observed on any metal measures should be taken to avoid further degradation.

When storing ferrous metals, they need to be elevated off the soil to prevent rust from forming on ferrous metals. Commonly, stockpiles of ferrous metals are stored elevated by wooden planks or pallets. Rust contaminates the soil and pollutes run off water with visible and non-visible pollutants.
